Food allergies may be caused by pesticides in tap water

tap water
A new study finds that chemicals leached from agricultural pesticides and water treatment processes can lead to food allergies.

With the legions of people suffering from new nut allergies, gluten sensitivities, soy aversion and lactose-intolerance, we’re either becoming an increasingly food-neurotic culture, or food allergies really are on the rise.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an 18 percent uptick in food allergies between 1997 and 2007. Food allergies now affect a whopping 15 million Americans. But according to a new study published in the December issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, it looks like the increase is more than a hypochondriacal diet fad. Like the aphorism goes, there's something in the water — and that something is pesticides.
The study reported that high levels of the chemical dichlorophenol in the body are associated with food allergies. Dichlorophenol is often put in agricultural pesticides as well as consumer insect and weed control products. It is also used to chlorinate tap water.
 tap water
"Previous studies have shown that both food allergies and environmental pollution are increasing in the United States," said allergist Elina Jerschow, M.D., M.Sc., ACAAI fellow and lead study author. "The results of our study suggest these two trends might be linked, and that increased use of pesticides and other chemicals is associated with a higher prevalence of food allergies."
She noted that the dichlorophenol-containing pesticides may possibly weaken food tolerance in some people, causing food allergy.
While the results of the study may have people who endure food allergies stocking up on bottled water, simply avoiding tap water may not help. "Other dichlorophenol sources, such as pesticide-treated fruits and vegetables, may play a greater role in causing food allergy," said Jerschow.

Aye-Aye

The aye-aye is a small lemur that lives in Madagascar. This creature would be hard-pressed to win a primate beauty pageant. The average aye-aye has large bulbous eyes — not unlike Gollum from "Lord of the Rings" — huge ears that are more creepy than adorable and nightmarishly long fingers. There is no evolutionary benefit to good looks in the aye-aye line.
 aye-aye
To complete this strange package, the aye-aye feeds more like a woodpecker than a primate. The aye-aye taps on trees to find grubs, gnaws a hole into the wood, and uses its freakishly long middle finger — which looks like something Tim Burton might have created — to pull out its dinner.

Weird and wonderful wildlife

With all the bizarre and crazy creatures humans have invented, it's easy to forget that for every unicorn there is a bizarre creature that actually exists. Evolution and niche specialization can create some crazy-looking forms of life. Here are six strange examples.Frilled shark

Frilled shark

The frilled shark is straight out of central casting for prehistoric sharks and has been called a "living fossil" due to its unique and seemingly evolutionarily stunted features. It's not clear just how much direct lineage the frilled shark shares with ancient sharks, but even the possibility of a connection is exciting.
 Frilled shark head
Whatever its origins, the frilled shark is one of the stranger things swimming in the ocean. The frilled shark has been found all over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and seems to prefer feeding near biologically rich upwellings.

Dumbo octopus

The Dumbo octopus was so named because the fins that grow out of the side of its head resemble the floppy ears of Disney's flying elephant. The Dumbo octopus lives in extremely deep waters (up to three miles down) and looks as if it might be an anime caricature of an octopus.
 Dumbo octopus
It has huge eyes that are kind of adorable, and cute little tentacles that seem far too short for its bulbous little body. The Dumbo octopus uses both its tentacles and its Dumbo ears to move around, feeding off small worms, bivalves and crustaceans found on the sea floor.

Blobfish

The blobfish is a rare native of deep waters off Australia and Tasmania. Its choice of living quarters in the deep makes sense ... because this is one strange-looking creature.
 blobfish
The blobfish doesn't have the gas bladder that most other fish have to regulate buoyancy. Instead, it relies on its gelatinous flesh, which is slightly less dense than seawater, allowing it to easily swim around the ocean floor in search of food.

Shoebill

This bird looks like something you might see in a TV commercial — it has a wide, exaggerated beak that makes it look like a creature dreamed up to be the spokesperson for an insurance company.
 shoebill
Though this cartoonish bird looks like it should talk with a Brooklyn accent and bust your chops all day, the shoebill lives in swamps in east Africa and can grow to be nearly five feet tall. With a remaining population of only 5,000 to 8,000 birds, the shoebill is listed as a vulnerable species by BirdLife International.

Mars rover photo teeming with 'UFOs'

Photoshop filtering and dead pixels from the Curiosity rover cameras have led to a rash of pseudo-photos from the surface of the Red Planet.

According to the fringe sector of the Internet, Mars is practically teeming with aliens.

Since NASA's Curiosity rover touched down on the Red Planet two weeks ago and powered up its cameras, it has already managed to photograph several alleged UFOs and other "anomalies" in the surrounding landscape.

From classic flying saucers to an absurdly out-of-place fossilized human finger, here's a rundown of what UFO believers claim to have found in Curiosity photos so far. [Gallery of Mars 'UFO' Photos]

Horizon anomaly (aka impact cloud)
Speculation about Martians in Curiosity's midst got off to a running start when the very first sequence of photos taken by the rover raised questions. A hazy, distant object mysteriously appeared and then disappeared in consecutive images of the Martian horizon, perplexing even NASA scientists at first.

But the much-discussed "anomaly" turned out not to be a sign of alien activity, but rather the plume of dust kicked up by the sky crane that delivered the rover close to the Martian surface, then veered off and struck the ground some 2,000 feet (600 meters) away.

"We believe we've caught what is the descent stage impact on the Martian surface," said NASA engineer Steven Sell, sky crane specialist on the Curiosity mission.

Flying saucers (aka dead pixels)
In footage posted to YouTube Aug. 18, user "StephenHannardADGUK" applies a series of filters to a Curiosity image of the nearby rim of Gale crater, revealing what he says are four flying saucer-like objects stationed in the sky. More than 700,000 people have since given the video a gander.

"Four objects caught by Mars Curiosity, very difficult to make out on original image so I have used a few filters to highlight," he said in the video description. "What are these four objects? UFOs, Dust particles, or something else? As always you decide."

Experts say the four "objects" are actually just dead pixels in the rover's CCD camera — single points in the camera's imager that have lost functionality and register as white. Marc D'Antonio, a photo and video analyst for MUFON [Mutual UFO Network], told Huffington Post, "I fully concur at this point that these are dead pixels on the imager. All CCD [cameras] have them, and in a bland atmosphere like that at Mars, they would be very obvious as opposed to an active atmosphere like Earth, where they could end up hidden for a long time before anyone noticed them."

Photoshop filtering processes often blend, color-correct or contrast-heighten images in ways that turn single dead pixels into larger, more prominent shapes. In other words, "using a few filters" is exactly what the YouTube user should not have done in trying to clarify the contents of the Curiosity photo.

White dot UFOs (aka Photoshopped)
In a YouTube video that has racked up more than 400,000 views since it was posted by "ParanormalCollection" on Aug. 7, two small white dots trek across the Martian sky in a time-lapse sequence supposedly shot by one of Curiosity's hazard avoidance cameras and then accidentally "leaked" by NASA. The footage would be very curious indeed, and deserving of the widespread media attention it has accrued — if it were real, that is.

The images that appear in the footage are in fact the very first ones released by NASA, on Aug. 5, in which the impact cloud from the sky crane can be seen rising like a plume near the horizon. The difference is that no white dots appear in the original images.

This leaves viewers to contemplate which is more likely: that Curiosity happened to capture UFOs in the very first photos it took of Mars, that NASA removed the UFOs and released the scrubbed photos, then accidentally leaked the originals to "ParanormalCollection" — or that this YouTube user simply took the photos released by NASA, added a sequence of white dots to them in Photoshop, and posted the creation to YouTube? [7 Huge Misconceptions about Aliens]

Ancient finger, shoe, animal (aka rocks)
StephenHannardADGUK, he of dead pixel fame, also stumbled upon a few items that may or may not be leftover props from a David Lynch film miraculously transported to the floor of Mars' Gale Crater. "Mars Curiosty[sp] captures a possible ancient finger, a dome shaped object, a shoe or sandal and a possible Martian creature," Hannard wrote in the video description. "Are these anomalies real, tricks of the light or something else, as always you decide."

When Hannard zooms in on the rocks — which is what we have decided they are — one sees that the finger rock does indeed have a faint, shadowy outline at one end that looks somewhat like a fingernail, and the shoe rock does bear a resemblance to a carelessly overturned sandal. Likewise, a roughly round rock could be described as a dome-shaped object, and a crevice on another boulder does give it the vague look of a grinning Martian animal.

It's the logical leap of deciding that the rocks might actually be these things that most people don't take.

New evidence of the asteroid impact that killed dinosaurs?

The new extinction date is precise to within 11,000 years.

The idea that a cosmic impact ended the age of dinosaurs in what is now Mexico now has fresh new support, researchers say.

The most recent and most familiar mass extinction is the one that finished the reign of the dinosaurs — the end-Cretaceous or Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, often known as K-T. The only survivors among the dinosaurs are the birds.

Currently, the main suspect behind this catastrophe is a cosmic impact from an asteroid or comet, an idea first proposed by physicist Luis Alvarez and his son geologist Walter Alvarez. Scientists later found that signs of this collision seemed evident near the town of Chicxulub (CHEEK-sheh-loob) in Mexico in the form of a gargantuan crater more than 110 miles (180 kilometers) wide. The explosion, likely caused by an object about 6 miles (10 km) across, would have released as much energy as 100 trillion tons of TNT, more than a billion times more than the atom bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

However, further work suggested the Chicxulub impact occurred either 300,000 years before or 180,000 years after the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. As such, researchers have explored other possibilities, including other impact sites, such as thecontroversial Shiva crater in India, or even massive volcanic eruptions, such as those creating the Deccan Flats in India.

Timing of an impact
New findings using high-precision radiometric dating analysis of debris kicked up by the impact now suggest the K-T event and the Chicxulub collision happened no more than 33,000 years apart. In radiometric dating, scientists estimate the ages of samples based on the relative proportions of specific radioactive materials within them. [Wipe Out: History's Most Mysterious Mass Extinctions]

"We've shown the impact and the mass extinction coincided as much as one can possibly demonstrate with existing dating techniques," researcher Paul Renne, a geochronologist and director of the Berkeley Geochronology Center in California, told LiveScience.

"It's gratifying to see these results, for those of us who've been arguing a long time that there was an impact at the time of this mass extinction," geologist Walter Alvarez at the University of California at Berkeley, who did not participate in this study, told LiveScience. "This research is just a tour de force, a demonstration of really skillful geochronology to resolve time that well."

The fact the impact and mass extinction may have been virtually simultaneous in time supports the idea that the cosmic impact dealt the age of dinosaurs its deathblow.

"The impact was clearly the final straw that pushed Earth past the tipping point," Renne said. "We have shown that these events are synchronous to within a gnat's eyebrow, and therefore, the impact clearly played a major role in extinctions, but it probably wasn't just the impact."

The new extinction date is precise to within 11,000 years.

"When I got started in the field, the error bars on these events were plus or minus a million years," added paleontologist William Clemens at the University of California at Berkeley, who did not participate in this research. "It's an exciting time right now, a lot of which we can attribute to the work that Paul and his colleagues are doing in refining the precision of the time scale with which we work."

Final blow
Although the cosmic impact and mass extinction coincided in time, Renne cautioned this does not mean the impact was the only cause of the die-offs. For instance, dramatic climate swings in the preceding million years, including long cold snaps in the general hothouse environment of the Cretaceous, probably brought many creatures to the brink of extinction. The volcanic eruptions behind the Deccan Traps might be one cause of these climate variations.

"These precursory phenomena made the global ecosystem much more sensitive to even relatively small triggers, so that what otherwise might have been a fairly minor effect shifted the ecosystem into a new state," Renne said.

The cosmic impact then proved the deathblow.

"What we really need to do is to understand better what was going on before the impact — what was the level of ecological stress that existed that allowed the impact to be the straw that broke the camel's back?" Renne said. "We also need better dates for the massive volcanism at the Deccan Flats to better understand when it first started and how fast it occurred."

The Record for the Most Babies Born to One Woman is 69

The Record for the Most Babies Born to One Woman is 69

Vagina, It's not a clown carToday I found out that the record for most babies born to one woman is 69.  Yes, you read that correctly 69!
Who was this amazing woman with apparently a womb of steel and a vagina her husband just couldn’t say no too?  We don’t really know. (anti-climactic I know)  Her husband is the one who’s name has lived on because of her crazy baby making skills. (feminists of the world unite!)  She was the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev a peasant from Shuya, Russia who lived from 1707-1782.   We can only speculate how many fire safety ordinances he violated by housing all his progeny in his little peasant sized hovel.  Presumably, at some point they also had to choose to feed on the weak ones in order to provide food for the strong.
How did she manage this feat given most women only have about 30-ish years of baby making ability?  She gave birth to sixteen pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets; so basically a veritable baby making factory who scoffs at “one at a timing” it.  Amazingly, 67 of her children survived infancy.  No word on whether either of her breasts could say the same.
Now, let’s just take a step back here.  She was the “first wife” of Feodor Vassilyev.  Seeming to imply he married again; polygamy was not generally practiced at that time in Russia.  So we can assume he was only married to one lady at a time.  So this guy goes out; shuns wearing tighty whities (presumably); gets married; invests all his money in a baby naming book; then apparently takes every second his wife isn’t pregnant as a personal affront to his manhood; then she presumably kills herself (I mean really, wouldn’t you?) and he then somehow manages to swindle another woman into wanting to be his wife and take on raising his kids?  Can you imagine remembering all 67 of their names?  Especially considering that woman would also need to deal with the fact that they came in identical sets.  I don’t know about you, but my parents have to go through every one of my siblings names before they can correctly say mine when they want to get my attention.  That must have taken forever in that family.
Then of course, after old Feodor Vassilyev swindles her into becoming his second wife, he presumably decided to use her vagina as a clown car too. *shudders*
The really amazing thing of it is that with the 67 surviving kids, if each of them had 2 kids (a low number for back then, but we’ll be conservative here) and each of their kids had 2 kids and so on, and we assume about 25-ish years between generations.  Then this couple currently has around 70,000 descendants!

Giving Her Oral Sex

Women often complain about men's ability to perform cunnilingus or, as it's more commonly called,
oral sex. There are hundreds of men who write us asking for advice on how to give her oral sex. We can only imagine the millions of others who stand like a possum caught in headlights when it comes to the task. As such, we thought it was time to give readers a more in-depth look into the vagina and the amazing things that guys (and gals) can do to it with their tongues. The following oral sex techniques are a simple guide to teaching all of you the basics of "eating out."

If you're not much of a vaginal vacuum and are hesitant to try oral sex because of odors or whatever other preconceived notions that you have, ensuring that she has just come out of the shower will ease your tension and you'll be able to let loose orally. There are men who stand their ground and absolutely refuse to perform oral sex; we suggest you get over yourself, because your girl likes to receive oral sex as much as you consider a good blow job a part of foreplay.

Tongue To Lips

Any licking, gentle sucking or all-around moisture from the mouth to the vaginal entrance, the labia (lips) or the clitoris will surely make you popular with your flavor of the evening.

When you begin to give her oral sex, it's important to start slowly. Women like it when a man takes the time to appreciate her and her body. What she won't like is an overachiever who jumps right in with an aggressive tongue. Pretend that her entire vagina is an ice-cream cone with three scoops of your favorite flavor; if you don't like ice cream, we're sure you can still appreciate the metaphor. Use your tongue to lick her vagina from its entrance up to the clitoris. Remember to chill out and relax; enjoy yourself and don't get tense.

Move your tongue freely from her inner lips to her outer labia on one side. Once you've done that, draw her lips into your mouth and massage them with your tongue. And since the other side will probably get jealous, move on to the other side afterward.

Oral Exploration

Were you aware that the tongue is the body's strongest muscle? Well imagine what you could do with your tongue if you were giving her oral sex. Since you have more control with your tongue than with your penis, the sensations will drive her crazy.

Not only is your tongue naturally lubricated with saliva, you can maneuver it in ways that a penis never could. So why not use your tongue to have sex with her? Thrust your tongue in and out of her vagina, and take a break from time to time to explore her insides.

While you're roaming around down there, vary your cadence and the firmness of your tongue. Use your firm, flexed tongue for pinpoint accuracy, such as when you circle the clitoris, and use a limber, flat tongue to cover more ground.

Remember to continuously return to her clitoris since most women achieve orgasm through clitoral stimulation -- especially when it comes to oral sex. However, don't apply too much pressure to her clitoris right away because it may irritate her and turn her off. Start out gently and increase pressure and speed according to herbody language.

Above all, have fun down there when you're giving her oral sex, and keep her on her toes (or off as the case may be).

Intense Vaginal Volume

When you have her as hot as a lioness in heat, the following oral sex techniques are going to drive her wild. Once again, make sure to pay attention to her reactions and body language at all times.

With her clitoris still exposed, give it quick little sucks by enveloping it with your mouth momentarily and releasing it. This will definitely have a positive effect on her entire body.

Next, take her clitoris into your mouth and gently suck on it while you simultaneously flick your tongue over and around it. You can perform this oral technique very lightly or aggressively, depending on what she likes.

If you combine these oral sex techniques with your fingers, she will have a mind-blowing orgasm virtually every time.

Some more secrets on giving her oral sex

Use your fingers

There is nothing that a woman likes more than a multitalented man. And if you know how to use both your tongue and fingers at the same time, you will definitely become her oral sex king.

While you're French kissing her clitoris, use your finger to rub it at the same time. If you can rub your stomach and pat your head at the same time, you might want to suck on her clitoris, penetrate her vagina and thrust repeatedly with your fingers.

Be careful not to lose sight of what you're doing because the vagina is a very sensitive area and one wrong move can leave you hung out to dry. Keep up with what you're doing to her. Make sure that you're not thrusting your fingers too deep or too fast. You might also want to use your finger to rub her G-Spot; it's not that big of a mystery as it's a rough-feeling portion of flesh located on the anterior wall of the vagina.

The tongue's the one

Use your tongue freely and don't be afraid to venture into uncharted territory; the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed she will be. And perhaps you weren't aware of this, but if your woman is a gusher, the feeling of her ejaculate flowing all over your mouth is one of the world's greatest aphrodisiacs.

No one likes a slobbering idiot, so don't lose your mind while you're in her sacred garden. Don't start drooling all over her vagina and don't do random things when you're giving her oral sex. Always have a strategy when you're going down and an escape plan, just in case you hit a foul ball.

Lastly, and we can't stress this enough: Never bite any part of the vagina. Not only can it cause physical harm, but you'll probably get thrown into the dog house.

Useful positions

In order to make your oral buffet as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible, have your lady lie on her back with her legs spread apart and her knees slightly bent. Get on your stomach between her legs and slide your arms under her legs. Your head ends up comfortably facing your oral objective. Wrap your arms around her legs and you'll have perfect access to her vagina, which allows you to manipulate it with your fingers.

You can also lie down in the same position and place both of your hands under her behind, elevating it so that it comes directly to your face. Although this requires a little more strength and requires both your hands, it can be very pleasurable for your woman.

Finally, you can bring her behind to the edge of the bed while you give her oral sex. Have her rest her feet on your shoulders or on the edge of the bed as well, and you'll have plenty of access while you kneel in front of her. This position will also give your fingers full access to her vagina.

bon appetit

There you have it -- some of the basics to giving her oral sex. Of course this isn't a definitive oral sex guide, but it's a good place to start. There are plenty of other positions and techniques that you can try; the ones here are just some of the more comfortable positions. Remember: Don't be shy, be gentle, take your time, experiment, and have fun.

Bollywood wishes new parents Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan for the baby girl

The Bachchan family is ecstatic about the birth of Abhishek and Aishwarya's first child, a baby girl in Mumbai, Wednesday morning. The news also spread cheer among many Bollywood celebrities, who sent out good wishes for their new bundle of joy.
Former Miss World Aishwarya, 38, was admitted to the Seven Hills hospital in Andheri, Mumbai, Monday night. The child was delivered in a normal manner a few minutes before 10 a.m. Wednesday.
As soon as the baby was born, Abhishek tweeted: "IT'S A GIRL!!!!!! :-)))))", while his father, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, shared his excitement on becoming a grandfather.
"I AM DADA to the cutest baby girl, A dada ji ... Ecstatic," posted the 69-year-old, who already has two grandchildren - Agastya and Navya Naveli, children of his daughter Shweta and son-in-law Nikhil Nanda.
Ash and the baby are doing "great", according to Abhishek, who has been by his wife's side ever since she was admitted to the hospital. He hasn't slept well because he is "too excited".
The Bachchan family has been recieving good wishes for the new addition.
Some family friends like former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, filmmaker Goldie Behl and his wife Sonali Bendre, as well as filmmakers Apoorva Lakhia and Bunty Walia, visited the hospital to meet the 'Baby B'. Singh was one of the first ones to visit the newborn at the hospital, which had tight security arrangements.
Most celebrities like Anupam Kher, Javed Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor, Karan Johar, Bipasha Basu and Arjun Rampal, as well as melody queen Lata Mangeshkar took to Twitter to shower blessings on the baby girl.
"Bachchan parivaar ko bohot bohot badhaai. Unke ghar mein Lakshmi aayi. (Many congratulations to the Bachchan family. Lakshmi has come into their house)," wrote Mangeshkar, while Johar tweeted: "Congratulations!! Baby B had a baby girl!! @juniorbachchan!!! All the love and happiness...am sure she will be the prettiest girl ever!!!"
Arjun, a father of two daughters, posted: "Congratulations daddy cool @juniorbachchan and the coolest Dadaji @SrBachchan and the most beautiful mommy Ash and the lovely dadi Jayaji."
Both Abhishek and Amitabh have thanked everyone for their wishes.
Aishwarya tied the knot with Abhishek in April 2007, and the event had grabbed a lot of media attention back then.
Ever since then, be it Aishwarya's baby shower, Karva Chauth or Diwali -- all such events at the Bachchan household attracted mass media coverage in the recent past. However, a 10-point advisory issued to TV channel heads by the Broadcasting Editor's Association (BEA) curtailed the electronic news coverage regarding the high-profile childbirth.
Now, Amitabh is expected to address a press conference in Mumbai either Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

5 Youngest Moms in the History

Linda -Medina -youngets-mom
Linda Medina was the youngest girl ever to give birth. She was just 5 years, 7 months, and 21 days when her 2.7 kg (6.0 lb) son Gerardo was born. Linda got attendance of her parents when they noticed abnormal increase of her belly; she was thought to have had a tumor but when Linda was taken to hospital, there they get to know about her pregnancy. The mystery remains unsolved about the father of Gerardo. Both mother and son died at the age of 40 and 76 respectively.
(age 8, Lima)
The father of Gerardo was never discovered, but this girl was raped by two of her own cousins. She got pregnant and gave birth to a baby weighing 2 kg (4.4 lb) by cesarean section at a hospital in December 2006.
(age 9, Hilda Trujillo)
Hilda Trujillo was third youngest mother to give birth at the age of nine. In November Hilda entered the Maternity Hospital as the patient of Obstetrician Rolando Colareta, underwent examination by a team of 16 obstetricians, gland specialists, radiologists, psychiatrists and general practitioners. They reported her to be normal, only a little older-looking than other girls of her age. After one month, on December 1957 she gave birth to a baby girl. Her 22 year old cousin was arrested, accused of rape. Dr Rolando Colareta who examined her gave reasoning saying “the rape of minors is nothing so unusual here or anywhere else. But of course rape does not mean pregnancy in children so young, except in rare cases”.
(age 9, Phetchabun.Thailand)
Not that long ago in the month of February 2001 Wanwisa Janmuk became youngest Asian mother. World’s forth youngest mother was married to a 26 year old man; by the time of birth mother and father were nine and twenty seven year old respectively.
(age 9, Singapore)
After Thailand, Singapore was second Asian country where a nine year old girl gave birth to a baby. She was student of primary school, had an affair with 14 year old student. Both were alone at home in the absence of their parents and she ended up getting pregnant
