ContributorNetwork – Fri May 6, 12:33 pm ETWith the current economy, many couples are finding it more difficult to plan their ideal honeymoons. The traditional long honeymoons to exotic locations simply often aren't affordable. Also, many people don't want to spend half of their honeymoon time traveling. The amount of time you spend on planes and other transportation is not only expensive, but also cuts into the romantic time you have together. The alternative is to have a staycation: a shorter break closer to home. In fact, Prince William and new bride Kate are following this trend. After the royal wedding, Prince William and Catherine spent the first night at Buckingham Palace where there were private receptions and celebrations. After that, they've spent their first married weekend at an undisclosed domestic location. Although they do say that they plan a delayed honeymoon, for the moment they've followed the staycation trend. Although my husband and I did have a fantastic honeymoon at the beach, we spent the first several nights at a hotel near our wedding venue. After that we actually spent a night at my grandmother's house visiting before going on our honeymoon. No, it wasn't the traditional order of leaving immediately on a honeymoon. You know what, though? It was perfect. I understand why Prince William and Catherine want to spend a few private days together, start their married life together, and then travel at a later date. If you are planning your own wedding, you may want to plan your own staycation. Here are some tips from my own experience and the new royal couple. Maintain privacy Just because it's not far away, it doesn't mean that your time isn't private and special. Keep your staycation a vacation by maintaining your privacy. It doesn't matter if you're one mile or a thousand miles away from home. Turn off your phones and--like William and Kate--keep your exact destination a well-kept secret. Keep the romance The ideal honeymoon spot is a romantic backdrop. The whole point is to have special time together to celebrate becoming a married couple and to strengthen your relationship. Your first few days together shouldn't be about sight-seeing or feeling obligated to go out and be busy. Choose a staycation destination that provides a romantic backdrop. This can vary depending on where you live from forest to beach settings, or even just city hotels with great rooms. Full Story »William and Kate adopt baby penguin
